This role-playing exercise will help you challenge the cognitive distortion of “control fallacies,” where one believes they have no control over their life or that they have complete control. The aim is to address the belief that you have either complete control over your financial situation or no control at all, and to find a more balanced perspective. This exercise turns the tables by having the therapist verbalize a cognitive distortion in a realistic scenario. The client’s role is to identify and challenge this distorted thinking, responding as if they were offering advice to a close friend. Included in this script are prompts the therapist can read, as well as fillable blanks your client can fill in beforehand or answer at the time of the exercise. Also included are follow up questions about the exercise you can ask your client to help them better process important concepts.

Role-playing scripts in counseling offer a dynamic way to practice and explore real-life scenarios in a safe environment. They help clients build confidence, develop new skills, and gain insights by simulating challenging situations, enabling them to approach similar circumstances in their everyday lives with greater understanding and preparedness. Our Challenging The “Control Fallacies” Cognitive Distortion Role Playing Script (Editable, Fillable, Printable PDF) is perfect for counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, and other mental health professionals. This role-playing exercise helps clients challenge the cognitive distortion of control fallacies, where individuals believe they either have no control over their life or that they have complete control. The goal is to address the belief that one has either full control or no control at all, particularly regarding financial situations, and to cultivate a more balanced, realistic perspective.

In this exercise, the therapist will role-play as a friend who feels powerless in managing their finances and improving their financial situation. The client’s role is to respond as a supportive and caring friend, helping the therapist challenge the control fallacy distortion by emphasizing that while we may not have complete control, there are actions we can take to influence our circumstances. The client can either fill out their responses beforehand or improvise them during the role-play.

Benefits of This Role-Play Exercise:

  • Counteracts Control Distortions – Helps clients recognize when they are feeling powerless or overwhelmed by the misconception that they have no control over their circumstances.
  • Encourages a Balanced Perspective – Assists clients in understanding that while they don’t have complete control, they still have agency over their actions and decisions.
  • Promotes Self-Empowerment – Encourages clients to take positive steps and recognize the impact of their efforts, even in challenging situations like finances.
  • Improves Problem-Solving Skills – Helps clients explore realistic ways to address issues within their control, fostering resilience.
  • Enhances Emotional Regulation – Reduces feelings of helplessness or anxiety by teaching clients that small, manageable steps can lead to progress.

How to Use This Exercise:

  1. Set the Scene – Make sure the environment is comfortable and conducive to the role-play.
  2. Introduce the Concept – Explain the cognitive distortion of control fallacies, discussing how it can lead to feelings of powerlessness or the belief that one has total control over external events.
  3. Engage in Role-Play – The therapist role-plays as a friend who feels they have no control over their finances, and the client responds with supportive statements that help counter this extreme thinking. The client can help the therapist identify areas where they do have control and where small steps could make a difference.
  4. Client Reflection – Clients reflect on their own beliefs around control, particularly in areas like finances, and consider where they might be either overestimating or underestimating their influence.
  5. Process the Experience – After the role-play, the therapist leads a discussion to process the experience and identify how the client can apply a more balanced perspective in their own life.

Why This Role-Playing Script is Great For Your Clients:

This role-playing exercise helps clients break free from the extremes of thinking that they either have no control or complete control. By practicing the skill of balancing control, clients can develop a healthier, more empowered outlook, particularly when it comes to financial matters. It supports clients in recognizing where they can take action, fostering a greater sense of agency, emotional resilience, and personal growth.
