Conflict is not simply a situational problem—it is a cognitive and behavioral process shaped by interpretation, emotional activation, and perceived options. Within Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the way an individual construes a conflict often determines how they respond to it, whether through avoidance, escalation, passive endurance, or intentional action.

The CBT Conflict Resolution Worksheet is designed to slow that process down. Instead of reacting automatically, clients are guided to examine their available choices in a structured, deliberate way. The worksheet centers on a core decision framework—accept, change, leave, or remain stuck—and invites clients to evaluate each option across emotional, cognitive, and practical dimensions.

By making these options explicit, the exercise helps shift clients from reactive patterns to intentional decision-making. It also highlights a key CBT principle: even when external circumstances cannot be fully controlled, responses to those circumstances remain flexible and open to evaluation.

Rather than treating conflict as something to “solve” immediately, this worksheet positions it as something to analyze before acting. Clients begin by clearly defining the situation, which serves as the anchor for the rest of the exercise. From there, each potential response pathway is explored in isolation.

The acceptance pathway focuses on cognitive and emotional adjustment. Clients consider what it would mean to fully acknowledge the situation without resistance and evaluate both the psychological costs and potential relief associated with that stance.

The change pathway introduces problem-solving and behavioral modification. Here, attention shifts toward what is realistically alterable—whether that involves communication, boundaries, or internal coping strategies.

The leaving pathway addresses disengagement. This includes both temporary and permanent forms of withdrawal, allowing clients to consider when distancing from a situation may be adaptive rather than avoidant.

Finally, the “stay stuck” condition is examined not as a failure, but as an active (often unconscious) choice. By analyzing the consequences of remaining in the same pattern, clients develop greater awareness of the cost of inaction.

What differentiates this worksheet clinically is the requirement that clients evaluate both positive and negative consequences for each option. This balanced appraisal reduces cognitive distortions such as black-and-white thinking, catastrophizing, and emotional reasoning.

The process concludes with a commitment phase, where the client selects a course of action and outlines how they will follow through. This bridges cognitive insight with behavioral implementation—an essential component of CBT intervention.

Application in Practice

This worksheet can be integrated flexibly depending on clinical context:

  • In-session use often involves collaborative completion, with the therapist helping the client challenge distortions and refine their evaluation of each option.
  • Between-session use supports generalization, allowing clients to apply the framework to real-world conflicts as they arise.
  • Standalone use can be effective for individuals working on decision-making skills, particularly in high-conflict environments or during periods of transition.

Clinical Value and Outcomes

Use of this worksheet is associated with several clinically relevant shifts:

  • Clients become more aware of choice points rather than defaulting to habitual responses
  • Emotional reactivity is reduced through structured cognitive processing
  • Decision-making becomes more balanced through cost–benefit evaluation
  • Avoidance patterns are identified and challenged through explicit comparison of options
  • Clients develop greater behavioral accountability by committing to a chosen course of action

Integration Notes for Clinicians

To maximise effectiveness, clinicians may consider the following:

Begin by ensuring the client can describe the conflict in specific, observable terms rather than global or abstract language. When reviewing each option, gently challenge overly simplistic conclusions (e.g., “That would never work”) by introducing alternative perspectives.

It is also useful to monitor for emotional bias during evaluation. Clients may initially favour options that reduce short-term discomfort rather than those aligned with longer-term goals. The worksheet provides a natural opportunity to explore this discrepancy.

Finally, the commitment section should not be rushed. The goal is not just to choose an option, but to ensure that the chosen path is realistic, actionable, and aligned with the client’s broader values and goals.
