ACT Self As Context Worksheet PDF
In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), self-as-context refers to the perspective-taking process of experiencing thoughts, emotions, and sensations without being defined by them. Rather than viewing the self as the content of internal experiences (e.g., thoughts like “I am broken” or “I am not enough”), self-as-context emphasizes the observing self—the stable perspective from which experiences are noticed, but not fused with or controlled by them.
This concept was developed within Acceptance and Commitment Therapy by Steven C. Hayes along with Kelly G. Wilson and Kirk D. Strosahl. Within the ACT model, self-as-context is one of the six core processes of psychological flexibility and supports cognitive defusion, acceptance, and flexible perspective-taking.
This ACT Self-as-Context Worksheet is designed to help clients differentiate between internal experiences (thoughts, emotions, self-stories) and the observing perspective from which those experiences are noticed. By shifting attention away from rigid self-narratives and toward the observing self, clients can develop greater psychological distance from distressing thoughts and reduce identification with unhelpful self-concepts.

This ACT Self-as-Context Worksheet guides clients through identifying current emotional experiences, self-related thoughts, and internal narratives, and then examining how these experiences are interpreted from both a conceptualized-self perspective and an observing-self perspective.
Clients are encouraged to notice when they are fused with self-defining thoughts (e.g., “I am a failure”) versus when they can step back and observe those thoughts as passing mental events. This process helps strengthen perspective-taking flexibility and reduces cognitive fusion with self-stories.
Over time, repeated practice supports the development of self-as-context awareness, allowing clients to experience thoughts and emotions without being dominated by them, thereby increasing psychological flexibility and emotional regulation.
